The Worm Moon is March’s full moon, named for the first stirrings in the thawing ground. In 2027 it is full on Monday, March 22, at 6:44 AM Eastern (3:44 AM Pacific), less than two days after the spring equinox. That timing makes it a full moon in Libra, and it also makes it the full moon that decides when Easter falls.
Here is exactly when to see it, why it is called the Worm Moon, which sign each Worm Moon lands in for the next five years, and what this Libra full moon means for you.

When to See the Worm Moon in 2027
The Moon is exactly full at 6:44 AM Eastern on Monday, March 22. In New York it sets at 6:44 AM that morning, so it reaches fullness in the same minute it touches the western horizon. If you are up before sunrise on the East Coast, look west and watch it go.
For everyone else, the show is the two evenings around it. A full moon looks round to the eye for a night on either side of the exact moment: in New York it is 99 percent lit on the evening of Sunday, March 21, fully lit on Monday, March 22, and still 98 percent lit on Tuesday, March 23. Nobody at your window will spot the difference.
The best view is moonrise, when a low Moon looks huge next to trees and rooftops. In New York on March 22 the Sun sets at 7:10 PM and the Moon rises at 7:49 PM, about 40 minutes later, in the east. On March 21 it comes up at 6:37 PM, half an hour before the 7:09 PM sunset, a pale coin climbing into a sky that is still blue. Check your local moonrise time and face east.

Why Is It Called the Worm Moon?
The popular story is earthworms. As the ground thaws in March, worms work back up toward the surface and the robins return to eat them. The Old Farmer’s Almanac puts it this way: the name “was originally thought to refer to the earthworms that appear as the soil warms in spring,” which “invites robins and other birds to feed.”
The Almanac now offers a second explanation. Captain Jonathan Carver, an 18th century explorer, “wrote that this Moon name refers to a different sort of ’worm,’ beetle larvae, which begin to emerge from the thawing bark of trees and other winter hideouts at this time.” Either way the meaning is the same: the ground is waking up, and the first creatures out are the small ones.
It comes from the same almanac tradition that named the Beaver Moon in November: a mix of Native American, colonial American and European names for each month’s full moon, collected and made famous by the almanacs. March got the worms. The beavers got a better deal.
The Other Names for March’s Full Moon
March had a lot going on, so it has a lot of names. These are the ones listed by the Farmers’ Almanac:
- Sugar Moon: the Ojibwe name for maple sugaring season, when the sap starts to run.
- Sap Moon: the Shawnee name for the same thing.
- Crow Moon: another Ojibwe name, for the crows calling and claiming territory as winter ends.
- Wild Goose Moon: an Algonquin name for the geese heading north again.
- Sore Eyes Moon: from the Lakota, Dakota and Assiniboine, for the glare of bright sun off the last of the snow.
- Wind Moon: a Choctaw, Cherokee and Catawba name for the March winds.
- Snow Crust Moon: from the Ojibwe and Chippewa, for snow that thaws by day and freezes into a hard crust by night.
- Lenten Moon: the Christian name, because March’s full moon usually falls during Lent.
- Chaste Moon: a name used by medieval English writers for the purity and renewal of spring.
Worm Moon Dates for the Next Five Years
Here is the thing nobody else tells you: a Worm Moon is not always in the same sign. Every full moon sits exactly opposite the Sun, and in March the Sun crosses from Pisces into Aries at the spring equinox. So a Worm Moon that falls before the equinox is a full moon in Virgo, opposite the Sun in Pisces, and a Worm Moon that falls after it is a full moon in Libra, opposite the Sun in Aries.
The degree follows from the same idea. The Sun moves about 0.99 degrees a day, so count the days between the equinox and the full moon, multiply, and the Moon sits at that many degrees into Virgo or Libra. The full working is in the notes for each year below.
| Year | Full moon (Eastern) | UTC | Sign and degree | Paschal moon? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Tuesday, March 3, 6:38 AM | March 3, 11:38 | About 13° Virgo, 17 days before the equinox, with a total lunar eclipse | No. The April 1 Pink Moon was the Paschal moon |
| 2027 | Monday, March 22, 6:44 AM | March 22, 10:44 | About 1°35’ Libra, 1.6 days after the equinox | Yes. Easter is March 28 |
| 2028 | Friday, March 10, 8:06 PM | March 11, 01:06 | About 21° Virgo, 9 days before the equinox | No. Easter is April 16, after the April 9 full moon |
| 2029 | Thursday, March 29, 10:26 PM | March 30, 02:26 | About 9°40’ Libra, 9.8 days after the equinox | Yes. Easter is April 1 |
| 2030 | Tuesday, March 19, 1:56 PM | March 19, 17:56 | About 29° Virgo, 20 hours before the equinox | No. Easter is April 21, after the April 18 full moon |
Two Libra years, three Virgo years, and 2030 misses Libra by about 20 hours. The cosmos has a sense of humor.
A Virgo Worm Moon has a different flavor from a Libra one. Virgo is the last gasp of winter housekeeping: sort, fix, clean, finish. Libra is the first social moon of spring: who you are with, what is fair, what you owe and are owed. 2027 is a Libra year, so this guide leans that way.
Why the Worm Moon Sets the Date of Easter
Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21. The church calls that full moon the Paschal full moon. In 2027 the first full moon on or after March 21 is the Worm Moon on Monday, March 22, so Easter is the following Sunday, March 28. That is early: by the church’s own rules Easter can never fall before March 22 or after April 25.
One detail the almanac stories skip. The church does not look at the sky. It uses a table of full moon dates built on a 19 year cycle, with the spring equinox fixed on March 21 whether the real one falls on March 19, 20 or 21. Most years the table and the sky agree, but the Old Farmer’s Almanac notes that the church “doesn’t use the exact date of the Full Moon we see in the sky,” and the Farmers’ Almanac says the church’s full moon “can differ by a day or two from the astronomical full moon.” The United States Naval Observatory gives 1962 as an example: the table’s full moon fell on March 20, the real one on March 21, and so Easter landed on April 22 instead of late March.
In 2027 there is no argument. The table and the sky both say March 22.
Worm Moon Spiritual Meaning
The Worm Moon carries the energy of thaw. Nothing is in bloom yet. The work is happening underground, where the frost is letting go and the first things are moving before anyone can see them.
Spiritually, this full moon asks you three things:
- What is stirring under the surface? The idea, the feeling or the plan you have been keeping frozen since the new year. It is moving now whether you look at it or not. Look at it.
- What has to break open? Seeds crack before they sprout. A full moon is a peak, the moment something becomes visible, and the Worm Moon tends to show you the shell you have outgrown.
- Who is coming back? The robins return for the worms. Someone or something that went quiet over winter is likely to reappear. Decide now how you want to meet it.
The Full Moon in Libra: What It Means
Every full moon is a conversation between two opposite signs. In March 2027 the Sun is in Aries and the Moon is in Libra, the first full moon of the astrological year, since the Sun entered Aries at the equinox on March 20.
Aries is me: instinct, action, going first. Libra is we: balance, fairness, the other person’s side of the table. Both are cardinal signs, the ones that start things, so this is not a moon for sitting still. It is a moon for noticing where you have been charging ahead alone and where you have been so busy keeping the peace that you forgot to want anything. The sweet spot is in the middle, and this full moon lights it up.
Expect relationships to be loud. A partnership, friendship or deal that has been quietly unbalanced tends to tip into view under a Libra full moon. You do not have to fix it in one night. You do have to see it.
A timing note: Mercury was retrograde from February 9 to March 3, 2027, slipping from 5° Pisces back to 20° Aquarius. It is moving forward again by the Worm Moon, but it does not clear the retrograde zone until March 23, the day after. So treat this full moon as the last day of the Mercury retrograde shadow: a good night to finally say the thing, a fair night to let the other person finish their sentence first.
If you were born with the Moon in Libra, this full moon lands on your own lunar territory, and everything about needing peace and fairness turns up a notch. Our guide to the Libra Moon explains what that placement needs to feel safe.

3 Worm Moon Rituals
- Plant something. Literally. A pot of herbs on the windowsill, a bulb in the garden, a seed in a jar of damp paper towel. Name it for one thing you want to grow this year, then keep it alive. Hard to ignore a goal that needs watering.
- Clear the ground. Before anything grows, the old leaves come off. Write a list of what you are done with: a grudge, a habit, a chat thread you keep reopening. Read it once, out loud if you can, then tear it up or burn it safely.
- Balance the scales. This is a Libra moon, so take a page and draw a line down the middle. On the left, what you give in your closest relationship. On the right, what you get. If one column is twice as long, you have found the conversation this full moon wants you to have.

What is the worm full moon? The Worm Moon is the traditional name for March’s full moon, named for the earthworms (or, in an older account, beetle larvae) that emerge as the ground thaws. In 2027 it falls on March 22 and is also the Paschal full moon that sets the date of Easter.
What causes the phases of the moon? The Sun always lights half of the Moon. As the Moon travels around Earth, we see different amounts of that lit half, from none at the new moon to all of it at the full moon, when the Moon is opposite the Sun as seen from Earth. The whole cycle repeats about every 29.5 days. For what each phase means for you, see our guide to the spiritual meaning of the moon phases.
Was the 2026 Worm Moon a blood moon? Yes. The Worm Moon of Tuesday, March 3, 2026, full at 6:38 AM Eastern, was a total lunar eclipse, with the Moon in Earth’s full shadow for about 58 minutes. It was the last total lunar eclipse anywhere on Earth until December 31, 2028.
What is the rarest moon ever? There is no official ranking, but the usual answer is January 31, 2018, when a supermoon, a blue moon and a total lunar eclipse all happened at once. NASA called it a rare opportunity to capture a supermoon, a blood moon and a lunar eclipse all at once, and the same night was also a blue moon. The Moon does not do encores often, so when three things line up, go outside.
When is the next full moon after the Worm Moon? The Pink Moon, on Tuesday, April 20, 2027, at 6:27 PM Eastern, in Scorpio.
“Everything that looks dead in March is just rehearsing its comeback.”
