The Buck Moon is July’s full moon. In 2027 it turns full on Sunday, July 18 at 11:45 AM Eastern, in Capricorn, opposite the Sun in Cancer. Because the exact moment lands late morning in the US, the show is the evenings of Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18, when a big golden Moon climbs out of the southeast just after sunset.
It’s named for the antlers that male deer grow in high summer, and that is also the mood: strength you have been building quietly all year is finally visible. Here’s exactly when to see it, why it’s called the Buck Moon, which sign it falls in (and how to tell for any year), and what this full moon in Capricorn means for you.

When to See the Buck Moon
The Moon is technically full at 11:45 AM Eastern on July 18, when it’s below the horizon for most of North America. That doesn’t matter to your eyes. The Moon looks full for a couple of days around the exact moment, so you get two good nights: Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18.
Catch it as it rises. In New York the Moon comes up at 8:38 PM on July 18, fourteen minutes after the 8:24 PM sunset, so the sky is still glowing when it appears. On July 17 it rises at 8:05 PM, just before sunset. Face southeast, find a low horizon, and give it twenty minutes. A rising full moon next to trees or rooftops looks enormous. Check your own city’s moonrise, since it shifts from city to city.
One thing you’ll notice: the Buck Moon never climbs very high. A full moon sits opposite the Sun, so its path across the night sky copies the Sun’s path from six months earlier. The January Sun arcs low, and so does the July full moon. It stays big, gold and low in the south all night, which is exactly what makes it photogenic.
This one is not a supermoon. The Moon reaches apogee, its farthest point from Earth, about 20 hours after it turns full, at a distance of about 406,200 km. It will look a touch smaller than an average full moon. You won’t notice unless you’re measuring, and the low angle more than makes up for it.

Why Is It Called the Buck Moon?
Male deer shed their antlers every winter and grow a new set each spring and summer. By July those antlers are in velvet, the soft, blood rich skin that feeds the growing bone, and they’re growing fast. The Mississippi State University Deer Lab puts peak growth at up to an inch and a half a week for adult bucks. The July full moon was named for that burst of growth.
The name reached most of us through the almanacs. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says its full moon names come from a mix of Native American, colonial American and European sources, and the Farmers’ Almanac credits the Buck Moon to the Algonquin. It’s the same tradition that gives November the Beaver Moon, and every month its own name.
July’s full moon has other names too. Both almanacs list the Thunder Moon, for July’s storms, along with the Salmon Moon, the Berry Moon, the Raspberry Moon and the Halfway Summer Moon. The Farmers’ Almanac adds the Hay Moon, for the cutting season. All of them point at the same thing: the middle of summer, when everything is ripe and growing.
What Does the Buck Moon Mean?
The Buck Moon means growth that shows. Antlers don’t appear overnight. A buck starts growing them in spring, feeds them all through early summer, and by July they’re big enough that everyone can see them. That is the full moon’s message: what you’ve been building since the start of the year is now visible, to you and to other people.
Every full moon is a peak. The Moon is fully lit because it’s directly opposite the Sun, and in your life that shows up as something coming to a head, reaching its full size, or becoming impossible to ignore. The Buck Moon is a peak before the harvest. Nothing is being cut or gathered yet. This is the moment to look at what you’ve grown and admit it’s real.
Three questions this full moon tends to raise:
- What has grown? Name it. A skill, a relationship, a business, a boundary, a body of work.
- What is it for? Antlers have a job. Growth without a purpose is just weight.
- What will you do with it before the season ends? Summer doesn’t last. Neither does a peak.
What Is So Special About a Buck Moon?
Three things. First, it’s the full moon of high summer, the one the almanacs also call the Halfway Summer Moon. It arrives in the weeks after the solstice, when days are still close to their longest and the Sun is high and strong, which is why the Moon itself rides so low and looks so golden.
Second, that low path. For viewers in the Northern Hemisphere, July’s full moon tracks low along the southern sky, copying the January Sun. It spends the whole night near the treeline, which is where a full moon looks biggest and most dramatic.
Third, it can fall in one of two signs, and which one changes the whole reading. The Buck Moon is in Capricorn in some years and Aquarius in others, and most guides never tell you which. The next section shows you how to work it out for any year.
Which Sign Is the Buck Moon In? The Rule and the Years
Here’s the rule. A full moon is always in the sign opposite the Sun. The Sun is in Cancer from about June 21 and enters Leo around July 22 to 23. So if the Buck Moon falls before the Sun enters Leo, the Moon is opposite Cancer, in Capricorn. If it falls after, the Moon is opposite Leo, in Aquarius.
For 2027 the working is simple. The Sun enters Leo on July 23, 2027 at 1:04 AM UTC (9:04 PM Eastern on July 22). The full moon is at 3:45 PM UTC on July 18, a little over four days earlier. The Sun moves close to 0.95 degrees a day in July, so at the full moon it’s roughly four degrees short of Leo, at 25 degrees 49 minutes Cancer by the full formula. The Moon sits exactly opposite: 25 degrees 49 minutes Capricorn, which we round to 26 degrees.
The same rule, applied to the US Naval Observatory’s phase times, gives the next six Buck Moons:
| Year | Full moon (Eastern) | Sign |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | July 29, 10:36 AM | Aquarius |
| 2027 | July 18, 11:45 AM | Capricorn |
| 2028 | July 6, 2:11 PM | Capricorn |
| 2029 | July 25, 9:36 AM | Aquarius |
| 2030 | July 14, 10:12 PM | Capricorn |
| 2031 | July 4, 3:01 PM | Capricorn |
In UTC those are July 29 at 14:36, July 18 at 15:45, July 6 at 18:11, July 25 at 13:36, July 15 at 02:12 and July 4 at 19:01. The 2030 Buck Moon is full in the small hours of July 15 UTC, which is the evening of July 14 across the US, so that’s the date to use. And yes, in 2031 the Buck Moon falls on the Fourth of July.
A note on 2026, because you’ll see it listed wrongly: some sources called the 2026 Buck Moon a full moon in Capricorn. It wasn’t. The Sun entered Leo on July 22, 2026 at 3:13 PM Eastern, almost a week before the July 29 full moon, so that Moon was in Aquarius. The rule above is the easy way to check any year for yourself.
The Full Moon in Capricorn: What It Means in 2027
Every full moon is a conversation between two opposite signs. In July 2027 the Sun is in Cancer and the Moon is in Capricorn, the two cardinal signs that sit across the chart from each other.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon: home, family, feelings, the people you protect. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn: work, structure, duty, the thing you’re responsible for. Under this full moon those two pull against each other, and most people feel it as home versus work, or feelings versus obligations. Something you’ve been carrying for others, or at the office, reaches its full weight and asks to be looked at honestly.
Capricorn doesn’t do drama. It does decisions. This full moon favors the practical move: finishing the thing, setting the boundary, saying what the plan actually is. If you’ve been emotionally overextended at home or professionally overextended at work, the peak makes it obvious, and that is useful information, not a punishment.
The timing is kind. Mercury was retrograde from June 10 to July 4, 2027, sliding from Cancer back into Gemini, and turned direct on July 4 at 3:39 PM Eastern. The Buck Moon arrives two weeks later, and Mercury clears its retrograde zone the very next day, July 19. Plans that stalled in June can finally be signed, sent and started.

Buck Moon Spiritual Meaning
Spiritually, the Buck Moon is about visible strength. Antlers are armor that grows from the inside out, in the open, where anyone can see it. This full moon asks you to stop hiding what you’ve become. The strength you built in winter and spring is real, it’s yours, and it’s showing whether you announce it or not.
What is the spiritual meaning of the Buck moon in 2026? The 2026 Buck Moon fell on July 29 in Aquarius, opposite the Sun in Leo, so it asked a different question from 2027’s. Leo and Aquarius are about the self and the group: what’s yours alone, and what belongs to the circle, the cause, the community. That full moon invited you to take the thing you were proud of and put it to use for other people. If you did, 2027’s Capricorn Buck Moon is where you get to see the structure it built.
Underneath the year by year shifts, the evergreen meaning holds. The Buck Moon is a peak of growth before any harvest. It asks you to acknowledge what has grown, to carry it with purpose, and to use the long days while you have them. For where this peak sits in the whole cycle, from new moon to dark, see our guide to the spiritual meaning of the moon phases.
3 Buck Moon Rituals
- Name what you’ve grown. On the evening of July 17 or 18, write the date at the top of a page, then list everything that is bigger than it was in January: a skill, a habit, a friendship, a body of work, a boundary. No modesty. A buck doesn’t apologize for his antlers.
- Finish one thing. This is a Capricorn full moon, so honor it the Capricorn way. Pick the one task that has been nearly done for weeks and complete it before the Moon sets. One finished thing under a full moon beats ten plans.
- Take the moonrise walk. Check your local moonrise, go outside a few minutes before, and face southeast. Watch the Buck Moon come up low and gold over whatever horizon you have. Don’t talk for the first five minutes. Then decide one practical thing you’ll do with the strength you just named.
