The moon runs the month's emotional weather, and learning its phases is like finally getting the forecast. Every 29 and a half days it moves through the same cycle, from dark to full and back again, and each stage has its own energy and its own kind of work. Here is what each moon phase means, and how to use it.

The lunar cycle in four beats
If you only remember one thing, remember the four main phases: the new moon to begin, the first quarter to push, the full moon to see clearly, and the last quarter to release. The four phases in between are the transitions, and they matter too.
New moon: begin
The moon sits between the earth and the sun and goes dark. Spiritually this is the blank page, the quietest point of the month and the best time to set intentions. Keep them few and specific, and rest if you need to; the new moon is a seed, not a sprint. Each new moon takes on the flavor of its sign, which is why a new moon in Virgo asks for something very different from a new moon in Aries.
Waxing crescent: commit
A sliver of light returns, and so does momentum. This is the time to take the first small step toward whatever you set at the new moon, and to gather what you need to follow through: the information, the tools, the support.
First quarter: act
Half the moon is lit and the pressure builds. Expect friction here; it means the plan is real. The first quarter is for decisions and effort, and for pushing through the first obstacle instead of taking it as a sign to quit.
Waxing gibbous: refine
The moon is nearly full, and so is your to do list. This phase is for adjusting and polishing: looking at what is working and fine tuning the rest before things come to a head.
Full moon: see clearly
The moon sits opposite the sun, fully lit. Full moons illuminate, which is why everything and everyone gets loud. Emotions run high, truths come out and results show up. Read what the light shows you instead of fighting it. It is a good time to celebrate what has grown, notice what has not, and let go of whatever the light has made obvious.
Waning gibbous: share
The light begins to fade and the energy turns reflective. This is the phase for gratitude, for passing on what you have learned, and for the conversations the full moon made possible.
Last quarter: release
Half lit again, and shrinking. The last quarter is for editing your life down to what deserves to continue: clearing, forgiving, finishing and cancelling. Let go of the plans that did not work without making it a verdict on you.
Waning crescent: rest
The last sliver before the dark. Often called the balsamic moon, this is the most restful phase of the cycle, made for sleep, reflection and quiet. Do less on purpose. You are making room for the next new moon.
How to work with the lunar cycle
You do not need a ritual for every phase. Start with the two big moments: set one intention at the new moon, and check in on it at the full moon about two weeks later. Once that feels natural, add the quarters, acting at the first and releasing at the last.
Your own moon sign shapes how you feel all of this. If you have not found it yet, the free birth chart will show you in seconds, and moon sign vs sun sign explains what it means. Track your energy against the phases for a month or two and the patterns show up fast. That is when the month stops happening to you and starts happening with you.
