December’s full moon is the Cold Moon, and in 2026 it is full on Wednesday, December 23 at 8:28 PM Eastern (7:28 PM Central, 6:28 PM Mountain, 5:28 PM Pacific). It is the closest supermoon of the year, it is in Cancer, and it arrives about 52 hours after the winter solstice. The longest nights of the year get the biggest, brightest moon. The sky has a sense of timing.
Here’s when to look up, the rest of December’s moon dates, where the name comes from, why this one rides higher than any other full moon of 2026, and what a full moon in Cancer two days before Christmas asks of you.

When to See the December Full Moon
The Moon is exactly full at 8:28 PM Eastern on December 23, early in the evening, so for once the peak lands when it is already dark and you are still awake. The night of the 23rd is the one.
A full moon looks full for about a day on either side. On the evening of December 22 the Moon is about 97% lit, and on the 24th it is about 99% lit as it begins to wane. If clouds ruin the 23rd, you have two more good nights, and Christmas Eve under a near full supermoon is not a bad consolation.
For the most dramatic view, catch it as it rises. In New York on December 23 the Moon comes up at 3:58 PM, about 35 minutes before the 4:33 PM sunset, so you can watch it climb out of the northeast while the sky is still fading. The day before it rises earlier, at 2:52 PM, and on the 24th it rises at 5:15 PM, into a sky that is already dark. A full moon low on the horizon looks enormous next to rooftops and trees, so face northeast and check your own local moonrise time, which can differ by an hour or more depending on where you live.
December 2026 Moon Phases
The Cold Moon is the last full moon of 2026. Here is the whole month, in Eastern time.
| Phase | Date | Time (Eastern) |
|---|---|---|
| Last Quarter | Tuesday, December 1 | 1:08 AM |
| New Moon | Tuesday, December 8 | 7:52 PM |
| First Quarter | Thursday, December 17 | 12:42 AM |
| Full Moon | Wednesday, December 23 | 8:28 PM |
| Last Quarter | Wednesday, December 30 | 1:59 PM |
Two things trip people up. First, in Universal Time the New Moon falls on December 9 and the Full Moon on December 24, so calendars set to UTC show those dates instead. Second, the Moon looks nearly full for days. December 19 is a waxing gibbous at about 75% lit, two days after First Quarter, and December 28 is a waning gibbous at about 72% lit, two days before Last Quarter. Neither is a full moon, however bright the sky looks.
Is the Cold Moon a Supermoon?
Yes, and it is the closest full moon of the year. At the moment it turns full the Moon is about 356,740 km from Earth, and it reaches perigee, its nearest point to us, at 3:30 AM Eastern on December 24, about seven hours later.
That makes 2026 a year with three full supermoons: January 3 at 362,312 km, the Beaver Moon on November 24 at about 360,800 km, and the Cold Moon on December 23 at 356,740 km. Each one came a little closer than the last, so December is the finale.
How much bigger does it look? The Moon’s average distance is 384,400 km. Divide that by 356,740 km and you get 1.078, so the Cold Moon appears about 8% wider than an average full moon and covers about 16% more sky (1.078 squared is 1.161). Against the farthest full moon of 2026, on May 31 at 406,135 km, it is about 14% wider (406,135 divided by 356,740 is 1.138). You will not measure that by eye. You will notice the brightness, especially if there is snow on the ground.
Why Is It Called the Cold Moon?
Most full moon names in common use today come from a mix of Native American, colonial American and European traditions, and are the names the Old Farmer’s Almanac uses. December’s name needs no explaining. The Cold Moon, a name the Old Farmer’s Almanac attributes to the Mohawk, marks the arrival of real winter.
It is also called the Long Night Moon, which the Almanac attributes to the Mohican, because it rises during the longest nights of the year. In Europe it was the Moon Before Yule, for the midwinter festival. The Royal Observatory Greenwich also lists the Oak Moon. Every name points to the same picture: deep winter, long darkness, and one very bright light in the middle of it.
The Full Moon Two Days After the Solstice
This is what makes 2026’s Cold Moon special. The winter solstice falls on Monday, December 21 at 3:50 PM Eastern (20:50 UTC), and the Moon turns full at 8:28 PM Eastern on December 23 (01:28 UTC on December 24). From solstice to full moon is 3 hours 10 minutes to midnight, plus 48 hours, plus 1 hour 28 minutes: 2 days, 4 hours and 38 minutes, or about 52.6 hours.
That gap tells you the sign. At the solstice the Sun sits at exactly 0 degrees Capricorn, by definition. In late December it moves about 1.02 degrees a day, and 52.6 hours is 2.19 days, so by the full moon the Sun has reached about 2.2 degrees, which is 2 degrees 14 minutes Capricorn. A full moon is exactly opposite the Sun, so the Moon is at 2 degrees 14 minutes Cancer. The JPL Horizons ephemeris agrees: Sun at 272.23 degrees of the ecliptic, Moon at 92.23 degrees, both 2.23 degrees into their signs.
Now the part the name promised. A full moon is opposite the Sun, so it crosses the sky along the Sun’s path from the opposite season. The Cold Moon, two days after the solstice, follows the Sun’s late June track. In 2026 it goes one better: the Moon is also 3.9 degrees north of the ecliptic, so its declination is about 27.3 degrees north, further north than the Sun ever reaches (23.4 degrees). In New York it climbs to about 76 degrees above the southern horizon just after midnight, higher than the noon Sun gets there even at the summer solstice (about 73 degrees). It is the highest full moon of 2026, a shade above January’s at 27.1 degrees.
High also means long. In New York the Cold Moon rises at 3:58 PM on December 23 and does not set until 8:07 AM on December 24: 16 hours and 9 minutes above the horizon, which is longer than the night itself (sunset 4:33 PM to sunrise 7:18 AM is 14 hours 45 minutes). The Long Night Moon is not a metaphor. It is up before dark and still up after dawn.

Cold Moon Spiritual Meaning
The Cold Moon carries the energy of reflection and completion. It is the last full moon of the year, it falls at the turn from the darkest days back toward the light, and it sits in Cancer, the sign of home. The whole sky is saying the same thing: come in, sit down, look at what the year was.
A full moon is a peak, the moment something becomes fully visible. This one asks you three questions:
- What did you finish? Not what you planned in January. What actually got done, grown or let go of. Write it down before the year’s noise makes you forget.
- What do you release before January? A grudge, a habit, a project that stopped being yours months ago. Full moons are for letting go; the new moon on January 7 is for starting.
- What does home mean now? Cancer rules home, family and the people who feel like both. Decide who and what you want closer in 2027, and who gets a little more distance.

The Full Moon in Cancer: What It Means
Every full moon is a conversation between opposite signs. In December 2026 the Sun is in Capricorn and the Moon is in Cancer, and this is the axis of duty and feeling.
Capricorn is the long game: work, structure, responsibility, the plan that runs to 2030. Cancer is the Moon’s own sign, so the Moon is at home here, and it is about what you need to feel safe: family, memory, food, a door that locks. Under this full moon the two have to talk. Expect the year’s ambitions to come face to face with the people who watched you chase them, two days before Christmas, with everyone in the same kitchen. Something you have been too busy to feel will ask for its moment. Let it.
The timing is kind. Mercury has been direct since November 13 and does not turn retrograde again until February 9, 2027, so the conversations this full moon starts have a clear road. If you were born with the Moon in Cancer, this one lands on your own Moon and will feel personal. If your Moon is in Capricorn, read our Capricorn Moon guide for the other side of the axis.

3 Cold Moon Rituals
- Close the year on paper. Take one page. On the left, write what 2026 gave you. On the right, write what you are leaving in it. Read both out loud, then fold the page and put it somewhere you will find it next December. Cancer is the sign of memory; let it keep a record.
- Light the longest night candle. The sky is darkest this week and the Moon is at its brightest, which is the whole lesson. Light one candle at moonrise, sit with it for ten minutes without your phone, and name one thing you want to carry into the light half of the year. Let it burn down on its own.
- Feed someone. This is a Cancer Moon, and Cancer is the sign of the kitchen table. Cook something from your family, or from the family you chose, and share it. The ritual is not the recipe. It is the table.
