Flower Moon 2027: When to See May’s Full Moon, What It Means and How to Use It

May’s full moon rises at the last degree of Scorpio. Here’s when to look up, why it’s called the Flower Moon, and how to work with its energy.

Real insights.
Brighter days.
Always.✦

May’s full moon is the Flower Moon, and in 2027 it is full on Thursday, May 20 at 6:59 AM Eastern (5:59 AM Central, 4:59 AM Mountain, 3:59 AM Pacific). It falls in Scorpio, at the very last degree of the sign. The big show for your eyes is the evening before and the evening of, when it rises huge and gold just after sunset.

This one is unusual. The April full moon was also in Scorpio, right at the first degree, so May closes a conversation that April opened. Here’s when to look, where the name comes from, what a full moon at 29° Scorpio means, and how to use it.

When to See the Flower Moon

The exact moment of fullness is 6:59 AM Eastern on May 20, when the Moon has already set or is sitting low in the west for most of North America. Don’t worry about the minute. To the eye the Moon stays round for roughly a day before and after that moment, which gives you two evenings that count: Wednesday, May 19 and Thursday, May 20.

The best view is always moonrise. A full moon low on the horizon looks enormous next to rooftops and trees, and it comes up gold. In New York on May 20 the Sun sets at 8:11 PM and the Moon rises at 8:57 PM, so give it about 45 minutes after sunset and face east. On May 19 it rises at 7:53 PM, before the Sun has set, and reads as 99 percent full. Either night works.

Why Is It Called the Flower Moon?

Because May is when everything blooms at once. The Old Farmer’s Almanac attributes the name Flower Moon to Algonquin peoples, confirmed by Christina Ruddy of the Algonquin Way Cultural Centre in Pikwakanagan, Ontario. The Almanac also lists a run of other May names that all point at the same burst of life:

  • Budding Moon and Leaf Budding Moon (Cree)
  • Egg Laying Moon and Frog Moon (Cree)
  • Planting Moon (Dakota and Lakota), for when seeds should go in
  • Moon of the Shedding Ponies (Oglala), as winter coats come off

There’s an older English name too: the Milk Moon. Around 725 the monk Bede wrote that the month we call May was the month of three milkings, because the land was fertile enough for cows to be milked three times a day. Flowers, frogs, eggs, milk: every name is about abundance arriving all at once.

So what is the name of the May moon? Flower Moon is the name almost every almanac and sky guide leads with now; Milk Moon and Planting Moon are the other two that come up again and again.

Is There a Blue Moon in May 2027?

No. That was 2026, when May had two full moons, on May 1 and May 31. In 2027 the full moons around it fall on April 20, May 20 and June 18 (US time), one per month, so there’s no Blue Moon in May and nothing to wait up for on the 31st.

Here’s why some Mays get two and some months get none. Full moons come about every 29.5 days (the average is 29.53). A 31 day month can fit two if the first lands on the 1st or 2nd. February, at 28 or 29 days, is shorter than the cycle, so it is the only month that can skip a full moon entirely. It last happened in 2018, and the next time is 2037. In both of those years the full moon falls on January 31 and then March 1 (March 2 in UTC), so January and March each get a Blue Moon instead.

Over a year the math works out to 12 full moons most years and 13 in some. 2026 had 13. 2027 has 12.

Flower Moon Spiritual Meaning

A full moon is the peak of the lunar cycle, the moment the Moon stands directly opposite the Sun and is lit from edge to edge. Spiritually it is a time of full disclosure. What you planted at the new moon is now visible, whether you like how it turned out or not.

The Flower Moon adds its own flavor: bloom. Flowers are the most honest thing in nature. They open fully, they are seen, and then they let go so the fruit can form. This full moon asks you two questions:

  • What is in full flower in your life right now? Name it and let yourself enjoy it. Half of the work of a full moon is noticing.
  • What has already finished blooming? Something that was beautiful in its season may be ready to drop its petals. That is not failure. That is how fruit happens.

For the whole cycle, from new moon to waning crescent, our guide to the spiritual meaning of the moon phases walks through each one.

The Full Moon in Scorpio: What It Means

A full moon always pits two opposite signs against each other. In May 2027 that pairing is the Sun in Taurus and the Moon in Scorpio. Taurus is what you own, keep and can touch: money, comfort, the body, the garden. Scorpio is what you share, owe, hide and release: intimacy, joint finances, trust, endings. Under this full moon the question is whether what you’re holding onto is still worth holding.

If you have a Taurus Moon, the Sun side of this axis is home turf: you’ll feel the pull to protect what’s yours. If you have a Scorpio Moon, this full moon lands squarely on your emotional nature, and whatever you’ve been keeping to yourself is likely to surface.

Why This Flower Moon Is Different

Most years the Flower Moon is a single Scorpio full moon and that’s that. 2027 gives you two in a row, bookending the whole sign.

  • April 20, 2027: full moon at 0° Scorpio (0 degrees 37 minutes), the first degree of the sign.
  • May 20, 2027: full moon at 29° Scorpio (29 degrees 14 minutes), the last degree of the sign.

Here’s the working. The Sun moves into Gemini on May 21, 2027 at 2:18 AM Eastern, about 19 hours after the full moon. It covers roughly 0.96 degrees a day in late May, so in those 19 hours it travels about 46 minutes of arc. Subtract that from the 30° Taurus boundary and the Sun sits at 29°14’ Taurus when the Moon is full. The Moon is exactly opposite, at 29°14’ Scorpio. The same check on April 20 puts the Sun at 0°37’ Taurus, about 15 hours after it entered the sign, and the Moon at 0°37’ Scorpio.

In astrology the last degree of a sign is a place of urgency and completion. Whatever Scorpio theme opened for you around April 20, a trust issue, a shared bill, a secret, a bond that deepened or frayed, comes to its conclusion now. The April full moon raised the subject. The May full moon has the last word. Then the Moon moves into Sagittarius and the subject changes.

Why the Flower Moon Is Sometimes in Sagittarius

Readers who remember 2024 may have seen the Flower Moon called a Sagittarius full moon, and they’re right. The Sun enters Gemini around May 20 or 21 every year. A May full moon that falls before that moment is in Scorpio; one that falls after it is in Sagittarius. On May 23, 2024 the Moon was full at 2° Sagittarius. In 2027 the full moon beats the Sun’s sign change by about 19 hours, so it stays in Scorpio, by less than a degree.

3 Flower Moon Rituals

  1. Cut flowers and name what’s blooming. Bring real flowers inside, lilac, peonies, whatever is open where you live. As you arrange them, name one thing in your life that is in full flower right now. Say it out loud. Scorpio full moons are good at finding problems, so make this one find what’s working first.
  2. Write the last word. On a single page, write down the Scorpio thing you’ve been carrying since April 20: the grudge, the debt, the secret, the attachment. Finish with the sentence you’ve wanted to say and haven’t. Then fold it and put it away, or burn it safely. The last degree of a sign is for endings. Give yours a proper one.
  3. Plant something. This is the Planting Moon in Dakota and Lakota tradition. Put a seed or a cutting in soil and let it stand for what grows next, now that the Scorpio chapter is closed. Taurus, the sign the Sun is in, is the gardener of the zodiac.

Flower Moon FAQ

When is the Flower Moon in 2027? Thursday, May 20, 2027, at 6:59 AM Eastern (5:59 AM Central, 4:59 AM Mountain, 3:59 AM Pacific). The best nights to see it are the evenings of May 19 and May 20.

What is the name of the May moon? The Flower Moon, named for the flowers that bloom across North America in May. Other traditional names include the Milk Moon, Planting Moon, Budding Moon, Frog Moon and Moon of the Shedding Ponies.

What sign is the Flower Moon in 2027? Scorpio, at 29 degrees, the last degree of the sign, opposite the Sun at 29° Taurus. It is the second Scorpio full moon in a row, after the April 20 full moon at 0° Scorpio.

How often does a full moon occur? About every 29.5 days, which is the time the Moon takes to go from one full moon to the next. That gives 12 full moons in most years and 13 in some; 2027 has 12.

What happens to your body during a full moon? Less than folklore says. One Swiss study of 33 people, published in Current Biology in 2013, found that around the full moon volunteers took about 5 minutes longer to fall asleep, slept about 20 minutes less and had 30 percent less deep sleep brain activity. Larger studies since then, including one of 5,812 children, found little or no effect, and an analysis of 70 million birth records found no link between full moons and births. If you sleep badly this week, blame the bright sky through the curtains before you blame the Moon.

Which month has no full moon? February, and only in some years. At 28 or 29 days it is the one month shorter than the 29.5 day cycle. It last skipped a full moon in 2018 and will next in 2037.

When is the next full moon after the Flower Moon? The Strawberry Moon, on Friday, June 18, 2027, at 8:44 PM Eastern, in Sagittarius.

“Let it bloom all the way. The petals were never the point; the fruit is.”
