Pink Moon 2027: When to See It, What It Means and How to Use It

April’s full moon rises April 20, 2027 in Scorpio. Here’s when to look up, where the name comes from, and how to work with its energy.

Real insights.
Brighter days.
Always.✦

The Pink Moon is April’s full moon, and in 2027 it peaks on Tuesday, April 20 at 6:27 PM Eastern as a full moon in Scorpio. No, the Moon will not be pink. The name comes from a wildflower, and the mood comes from Scorpio, which is where the attitude lives.

Here’s exactly when to see the April full moon, why it’s called the Pink Moon, whether it sets the date of Easter this year, and what a full moon at the very first degree of Scorpio means for you.

When Is the Pink Moon in 2027?

The Moon is exactly full on April 20, 2027 at 22:27 UTC, which is 6:27 PM Eastern, 5:27 PM Central, 4:27 PM Mountain and 3:27 PM Pacific. For the US that is early evening, so you get the full moon on the night it is actually full. That doesn’t always happen.

That also explains why different calendars argue about dates. In 2026 the Pink Moon peaked at 10:12 PM Eastern on April 1, which was already 2:12 AM on April 2 in UTC. The almanac said April 1 and the University of Arizona’s phase table said April 2, and both were right. A full moon has one moment, and the date depends on where you’re standing. For 2027, every US time zone agrees: April 20.

Your eyes are less fussy than a clock. A full moon looks full for about a day either side of the exact moment, so the evenings of Monday, April 19, Tuesday, April 20 and Wednesday, April 21 all give you the show.

The best view is moonrise on April 20, when the Moon comes up low and huge over the eastern horizon. In New York, the Sun sets at 7:41 PM and the Moon rises nine minutes later at 7:50 PM. Face east, bring a jacket, and give it half an hour to clear the rooftops.

One more thing: this is not a supermoon and not a micromoon. The Moon’s closest point to Earth in April 2027 comes on April 14, and its farthest on April 27. The full moon on April 20 sits in between, so it is an average sized full moon. Which is still a full moon in Scorpio, so you’ll cope.

And if you landed here from a question like “Is April 22 a full moon?” or “Is April 27 a full moon?”: not in 2027. Those dates come from other years. April 22, 2016 was a full moon, and so was the night of April 26 to 27, 2021. The full dates for recent and coming years are in the FAQ below.

Why Is the April Full Moon Called the Pink Moon?

It’s named for a flower, not a color. The pink in question is moss phlox, Phlox subulata, a low creeping plant native to eastern North America that carpets the ground in pink around the time of April’s full moon. Its common names include moss pink, creeping phlox and ground pink, and when a whole hillside of it blooms at once, you understand the name.

The Moon itself is grey, and it looks whatever color the Earth’s atmosphere makes it look. If it glows gold or orange for a few minutes while it’s low on the horizon, that’s the air between you and it, and it happens in any month.

The full moon names in the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Pink Moon among them, were collected from Native American, colonial American and European traditions. April’s full moon has a long list of other names, because April is when the world wakes up and everyone noticed something different:

NameWho used it
Breaking Ice MoonAlgonquin
Frog MoonCree
Sucker MoonAnishinaabe
Moon When the Geese Lay EggsDakota
Moon When the Ducks Come BackLakota
Moon of the Red Grass AppearingOglala
Budding Moon of Plants and ShrubsTlingit
Sprouting Grass Moon, Egg Moon, Fish MoonAlmanac names
Peony MoonChina
Budding Moon, Seed MoonCeltic tradition
Passover Moon, Paschal MoonJewish and Christian calendars

Ice breaking, frogs singing, geese laying, grass sprouting, fish running upstream. Every one of those names is about the same thing: the moment the year starts moving again.

Is the Pink Moon the Paschal Moon? How It Sets Easter

Sometimes. The Paschal Moon is the full moon that sets the date of Easter, and in 2026 the Pink Moon was it. In 2027 it isn’t, and the reason is worth two minutes of your time.

Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the spring equinox. Two catches: the church fixes the equinox at March 21 regardless of what the sky is doing (in 2027 the real equinox is March 20), and the church uses its own table of full moons, which can sit a day away from the astronomical one. A full moon that falls before March 21 is the Lenten Moon. The first one on or after March 21 is the Paschal Moon.

Here’s the 2027 calculation, using the standard Gregorian formula:

  1. 2027 divided by 19 leaves a remainder of 13. That is the year’s place in the 19 year lunar cycle.
  2. Run it through the century corrections and the church full moon lands on March 21 plus 1 day: March 22, 2027, a Monday.
  3. The first Sunday after March 22 is March 28, 2027. That’s Easter.
  4. The sky agrees: the astronomical full moon was March 22 at 6:44 AM Eastern, the Worm Moon, which is why 2027 had an early Easter.

So in 2027 the Paschal Moon is the Worm Moon. By the time the Pink Moon rises on April 20, Easter has been over for three weeks. In 2026 it went the other way: the March full moon came on March 3, well before the equinox, so the church full moon fell on April 2, the Pink Moon was the Paschal Moon, and Easter was April 5.

That is what is special about the April full moon. It sits right on the hinge of the year. In roughly two years out of three it is the first full moon of spring and the one the Easter date hangs on. In the other years, like 2027, it is the second full moon of spring, and the hinge has already swung.

Pink Moon Spiritual Meaning

The Pink Moon is the full moon of first growth. Not the seed in the dark (that was the new moon back on April 6) but the shoot that has broken the surface and now has to survive in the open. Moss phlox blooms low and all at once. That’s the energy: small, bright, early, and in no mood to wait.

A full moon is a peak, the moment something becomes visible. The spring full moon shows you what has actually started growing in your life since the year turned, which is not always what you planted on purpose. Under this one, ask yourself three things:

  • What is sprouting? Look for the habit, project or feeling that has quietly started without your permission. It’s the thing you keep coming back to.
  • What needs light? Growth that stays hidden stays small. Something you’ve kept private is ready to be seen.
  • What has to be cleared? Phlox doesn’t bloom under a pile of dead leaves. Name the one thing that is shading your new growth, and plan how to move it.

Those three questions do the work of the whole lunar cycle in one night. If you want the longer version, our guide to the spiritual meaning of each moon phase walks through the cycle from dark to full and back.

The Full Moon in Scorpio: What It Means

Every full moon is a conversation between two opposite signs. On April 20, 2027 the Sun is in Taurus and the Moon is in Scorpio, and the timing is unusually tight. The Sun only crossed into Taurus around 3 AM Eastern that same morning, so by the time the Moon is full about 15 hours later, the Sun sits at 0° 37’ Taurus and the Moon at 0° 37’ Scorpio. Both of them are at the very first degree of their signs.

Taurus is security: the body, money, comfort, what you can touch and keep. Scorpio is depth: intimacy, trust, what you share, what you’d rather not say out loud. A Taurus and Scorpio full moon asks whether the safe thing and the true thing are the same thing. Usually they are not, and the Moon in Scorpio wants the true one.

The first degree matters. A full moon at the opening degree of Scorpio is a first step, and the one at the closing degree a month later is the follow through. So this is Scorpio with the lights just switched on: a feeling that has only just arrived and asks to be dealt with now.

Mercury is direct (its last retrograde ended March 3, and the next doesn’t start until June 10), so what gets said under this Moon tends to hold. Conversations you have this week are not the kind you walk back a month later.

And here’s the part the ephemeris shows you. The next full moon, the Flower Moon on May 20, 2027, is also in Scorpio, at 29° 14’. The Sun is still in the last degree of Taurus that morning, so 2027 gives you two Scorpio full moons back to back: one at the first degree of the sign, one at the last. Whatever the Pink Moon opens, the Flower Moon closes. Treat April 20 as the first honest conversation and May 20 as the resolution, and the month in between as the work.

If your natal Moon is in Scorpio, this one lands at home. Our Scorpio Moon guide explains why your feelings run as deep as they do.

3 Pink Moon Rituals

  1. Plant something. Literally, if you can: seeds in a pot on the windowsill, phlox in the yard. If you can’t, plant a habit. Pick the one small thing you’ve been meaning to start, do it once tonight, and do it again tomorrow. Growth is just repetition with a start date.
  2. Clear the ground. This is the release ritual, with a Scorpio edge. Write down what is shading your growth: a resentment, a draining obligation, a version of yourself you’ve outgrown. Tear the page up and wash your hands afterward. The hand washing matters. Treat it as the marker that the thing is over.
  3. Say one true thing. A Scorpio full moon rewards honesty and punishes performance. Choose one true sentence you’ve been swallowing and say it out loud, to the person it belongs to if that’s safe and kind, or to the Moon if it isn’t. Mercury is direct, so it will hold.

What to avoid during the full moon? Three things. Don’t make a big impulsive decision while your feelings are at full volume, and a Scorpio full moon turns the volume up. Don’t pick the fight; have the conversation instead. And don’t set brand new intentions tonight. The full moon is for seeing and releasing. Save the fresh starts for the new moon on May 6.

Upcoming Full Moons

Here are the six full moons that follow the Pink Moon, with dates in Eastern time and the sign the Moon is in.

Date (Eastern)NameMoon sign
May 20, 2027Flower MoonScorpio
June 18, 2027Strawberry MoonSagittarius

For the opposite end of the year, the Beaver Moon in November is the other named full moon we’ve covered so far.

Pink Moon FAQ

When is the Pink Moon in 2027? Tuesday, April 20, 2027 at 6:27 PM Eastern, 5:27 PM Central, 4:27 PM Mountain and 3:27 PM Pacific (22:27 UTC). It looks full on the evenings of April 19, 20 and 21.

Is April 27 a full moon? Not in 2027. The April 2027 full moon is on April 20. April 27 was a full moon in 2021, when the Pink Moon peaked at 11:31 PM Eastern on April 26, which was 3:31 AM on April 27 in UTC. Recent and coming Pink Moons: April 23, 2024; April 12, 2025; April 1, 2026; April 20, 2027; April 9, 2028.

Is April 22 a full moon? Not in 2027. The nearest full moon is April 20, and the Moon still looks full on the evening of April 21, but by April 22 it is visibly waning. April 22 was a full moon in 2016.

Why is the April full moon called a pink Moon? For moss phlox, a creeping wildflower native to eastern North America that blooms pink in April. The name describes the ground, not the Moon, which looks its usual color.

What does the pink Moon mean spiritually? First growth. It is the full moon of things that have just broken the surface and now need light. Spiritually it asks what is sprouting in your life, what needs to be seen, and what has to be cleared so it can grow.

What is special about the April full moon? It sits on the hinge of the year. In most years it is the first full moon of spring and the Paschal Moon that sets the date of Easter. In 2027 the Worm Moon on March 22 took that job, so the Pink Moon is the second full moon of spring, in Scorpio, and the first of two Scorpio full moons in a row.

What sign is the Pink Moon in 2027? Scorpio, at 0° 37’, opposite the Sun at 0° 37’ Taurus. Both are at the first degree of their signs, so this full moon is a first step, and the Flower Moon in May, at the last degree of Scorpio, is the follow through.

Is the Pink Moon the Paschal Moon in 2027? No. The church full moon for 2027 falls on March 22, so Easter is March 28, three weeks before the Pink Moon. In 2026 the Pink Moon on April 1 was the Paschal Moon and Easter was April 5.

What to avoid during the full moon? Big impulsive decisions, picking fights, and setting brand new intentions. The full moon is for seeing clearly and letting go; start new things at the new moon on May 6, 2027.

When is the next full moon after the Pink Moon? The Flower Moon on May 20, 2027 at 6:59 AM Eastern, also in Scorpio, at the last degree of the sign.

When is the next Pink Moon after 2027? April 9, 2028, at 6:26 AM Eastern.

“Bloom early and tell the truth. Spring was never made for waiting.”
