The Wolf Moon is January’s full moon, and in 2027 it is full on Friday, January 22 at 7:17 AM Eastern. It is also the closest supermoon of the year, and it is in Leo, not Cancer. The Sun has already moved into Aquarius by then, so the Moon opposite it sits at 2° Leo.

Here is exactly when to see it, where the name really comes from (not where the internet says), the dates and signs for the next five Wolf Moons, and what a full moon in Leo asks of you.

When to See the Wolf Moon in 2027

The Moon turns full at 7:17 AM Eastern on Friday, January 22, which is right around sunrise on the east coast. In New York the Moon sets at 7:27 AM that morning, ten minutes after the exact moment, so you could catch it full and low in the west on your way out the door. For everyone else, the real show is the evening before and the evening after.

A full moon looks full for about a day either side of the exact moment, so the two evenings to plan around are Thursday, January 21 and Friday, January 22. Both are within about twelve hours of the exact moment.

The most dramatic view is moonrise, when the Moon sits low on the horizon next to trees and buildings and looks enormous. In New York it rises at 4:02 PM on January 21, about an hour before the 5:00 PM sunset, and at 5:24 PM on January 22, about 23 minutes after the 5:01 PM sunset. Face east, and check your own town’s moonrise time, because it shifts with where you live.

One more reason January is good for this: winter full moons ride higher than any others. A full moon sits directly opposite the Sun in the sky. In January the midday Sun hangs low in the south, so the Moon at midnight rides nearly as high as the Sun does in June. It clears rooftops and stays up most of the night.

Is the Wolf Moon 2027 a Supermoon?

Yes, and it is the closest full moon of 2027. The Moon reaches perigee, its nearest point to Earth in that orbit, on January 21 at 9:49 PM UT (4:49 PM Eastern) at 357,285 km. That is the smallest perigee distance of the whole year. The Moon turns full 14 hours and 28 minutes later, which is why this one earns the word “super” without any of the usual stretching.

What that looks like to your eye: a little larger and a bit brighter than an average full moon, not a different object. NASA’s own line is that a supermoon “appears slightly larger” than average and that it “might be hard to detect a supermoon visually,” so do not expect a different sky. The brightness is the part you are most likely to notice, especially on snow. If you want the biggest possible impression, watch it come up over the horizon on the evening of the 21st, right around the moment of perigee, when the horizon illusion stacks on top of the real thing.

Why Is It Called the Wolf Moon?

Short answer: the name is almost certainly English, not Native American, and the wolves were not hungry.

The story you will read everywhere is that Native American tribes named January’s full moon for wolves howling hungrily outside the villages. The Old Farmer’s Almanac itself says something different. Its full moon names page states that “January’s Wolf Moon is not a traditional Native American name,” that the name “is thought to have English origins and was brought to North America by European settlers,” and that settlers “may have used the term ’Wolf Moon’ even before they came to North America.”

Where did the “Native American names” list come from, then? NASA’s own Wolf Moon page puts it plainly: “The Maine Farmers’ Almanac began publishing Native American names for full moons in the 1930s.” That list spread widely through almanacs and news stories, with one name per month as if the whole continent agreed. It didn’t. Different nations kept different calendars with their own names.

The January names the Old Farmer’s Almanac actually attributes to specific nations are:

  • Spirit Moon, Ojibwe
  • Cold Moon, Great Moon and Frost Exploding Moon, Cree
  • Hard Moon and Severe Moon, Dakota
  • Freeze Up Moon, Algonquin
  • Canada Goose Moon, Tlingit
  • Center Moon, Assiniboine
  • Greetings Moon, Western Abenaki

Notice that none of them mention wolves. And the hunger part is wrong too. The International Wolf Center describes two kinds of howl: “A defensive howl is used to keep the pack together and strangers away,” and “A social howl is used to locate one another, rally together and possibly just for fun.” When you hear a wolf at night, the Center adds, they “are not howling at the moon.” They are talking to each other. Wolves do howl in winter, the Almanac notes, to locate pack members, reinforce social bonds, define territory and coordinate hunting, which is probably why settlers heard them under this Moon.

So the honest version of the name: January is a month when wolves are more likely to be heard howling, and a pack that calls to find each other in the dark is a better symbol for this Moon than a hungry one anyway.

Wolf Moon Dates and Signs, 2026 to 2031

The Wolf Moon is not always in Cancer, and it is not always in Leo. The Moon’s sign at a full moon depends on where the Sun is, because a full moon is the Moon exactly opposite the Sun. The Sun is in Capricorn until about January 20 each year, then in Aquarius. So a Wolf Moon before January 20 is in Cancer (opposite Capricorn), and a Wolf Moon after it is in Leo (opposite Aquarius).

Here is the full working for 2027. The Sun enters Aquarius on January 20, 2027 at 7:30 AM UT. The Moon turns full on January 22 at 12:17 PM UT, which is 2 days, 4 hours and 47 minutes later, or 2.20 days. The Sun moves about 1.016° a day in late January, so by then it has traveled 2.23° into Aquarius. Add 180° for the Moon and you get 2.23° Leo, which the Cafe Astrology ephemeris confirms as 2° Leo 14 minutes.

2027Fri Jan 22, 7:17 AMLeo, 2°
2028Tue Jan 11, 11:03 PMCancer, about 21°
2029Tue Jan 30, 1:04 AMLeo, about 11°
2030Sat Jan 19, 10:54 AMCancer, 29°
2031Wed Jan 8, 1:26 PMCancer, about 18°

In Universal Time those are January 3 at 10:03 (2026), January 22 at 12:17 (2027), January 12 at 04:03 (2028), January 30 at 06:04 (2029), January 19 at 15:54 (2030) and January 8 at 18:26 (2031). Four notes on the table. The 2027 Wolf Moon is the supermoon, the closest full moon of its year. The 2028 one falls on the 12th in UT but the 11th in the US, and the 2029 one is 10:04 PM on January 29 in Pacific time. In 2030 the Sun enters Aquarius nine hours after the full moon, which is why that one sits at 29° Cancer.

The 2027 and 2026 degrees are from a published ephemeris. The 2028 to 2031 degrees are calculated from the Sun’s Aquarius ingress for each year and are good to within a degree.

So “Is it a wolf moon tonight?” has a different answer every year, and the table is the answer. “Is January 29 a full moon?” is a no for 2027: that night the Moon is at last quarter, a week past full. In 2029 it is a yes if you live in Mountain or Pacific time, where the 1:04 AM Eastern full moon on January 30 lands on the evening of January 29. Everyone else gets it on the 30th.

Two signs, two very different moods. When the Wolf Moon is in Cancer (2026, 2028, 2030, 2031) it is about home, family and what you need to feel safe, the natural territory of a Cancer Moon. When it is in Leo (2027, 2029) it is about being seen, pride and the heart, which is where the rest of this page lives. For the other end of the year, the Beaver Moon in November has its own page in this series.

Wolf Moon Spiritual Meaning

The Wolf Moon is the first full moon of the year, and it lands in the deepest part of winter. Its meaning comes from both of those things.

The first full moon is a check on your January intentions. A new moon starts something; a full moon shows you how it is going. Three weeks into the year, this is the moment to look honestly at what you said you wanted and ask whether you have actually moved toward it. No shame, no grand reset. Just a clear look under a bright light.

The wolf part is about the pack. Wolves howl to find each other across distance, and a January night is the kind of distance most of us feel: short days, cold evenings, everyone tucked away. The Wolf Moon asks who your pack is, who you have not called, and whether you have been going it alone out of habit rather than need. Inner strength under this Moon is not the lone wolf. It is the one who calls out and trusts an answer will come.

Spiritually, then, this full moon asks three things:

  • What did you promise yourself? Pull out the January list, or write down what it would have said. Check it against what you have done.
  • Who is your pack? Name the three to five people you can call at midnight. If the list feels short, that is information, not a verdict.
  • What are you carrying through the cold? A full moon is a release point. Something you have been hauling since last year can be set down here.

The rest of the lunar cycle has its own jobs, from the new moon’s seed to the waning crescent’s rest. Our guide to the spiritual meaning of each moon phase walks through the whole month.

The Full Moon in Leo: What It Means

Every full moon is a conversation between opposite signs. In January 2027 the Sun is in Aquarius and the Moon is in Leo.

Aquarius is the group: the cause, the community, the friends, the future everyone is building together. Leo is the heart: the individual, the creative spark, the need to be seen and loved for exactly who you are. Under this full moon those two pull against each other. Belonging to the group versus standing out from it. Being useful versus being adored. Something you have been doing “for everyone” may turn out to have been about wanting applause, and something you kept private because it felt too much may be ready to come out and take a bow.

That is not a problem to solve. It is a balance to find, and a full moon lights up both ends so you can see them.

The timing is clean. Mercury is direct on January 22 and does not turn retrograde until February 9, 2027, so conversations under this Moon tend to land the way you meant them. Say the proud thing. Ask for the credit. Tell someone they matter.

If your natal Moon is in Leo, this one lands on home ground. Our Leo Moon guide covers what that placement needs to feel safe, which is exactly what a Leo full moon pokes at. These are tendencies, not rules, and where this Moon actually hits you depends on where 2° Leo falls in your own chart. Our free birth chart calculator gives your rising sign, and from there the house is a count: your rising sign is your first house, the next sign your second, and so on round to Leo.

3 Wolf Moon Rituals

These are written for a Leo full moon. In the Cancer years (2026, 2028, 2030, 2031) swap the stage for the kitchen: the same rituals work, pointed at home and the people in it.

  1. Do one bold thing in the open. Leo wants to be seen and is terrified of it in equal measure. Post the work, sing the song, wear the thing, say the opinion in the meeting. Pick one and do it on January 21 or 22, in front of at least one other person. The point is not the reaction. The point is proving to yourself that you survive being looked at.
  2. Call the pack. A dinner if you can gather them, a group call if you can’t. Wolves howl to find each other across the dark, so do the human version: tell each person one specific thing they did for you last year. Keep it short and let it be a bit much. That is the Leo part.
  3. Burn the fear of being seen. Light a candle, the full moon’s own small sun. On a slip of paper, write the thing you hide because it feels like too much: the ambition, the talent, the want. Read it aloud once, then burn it safely in a dish. You are not burning the want. You are burning the hiding.

Wolf Moon FAQ

When is the Wolf Moon in 2027? The Wolf Moon is full on Friday, January 22, 2027 at 7:17 AM Eastern (4:17 AM Pacific, 12:17 UT). The best nights to see it are the evenings of January 21 and 22.

Why is the Moon tonight called a wolf moon? Because it is January’s full moon, and almanacs have called January’s Moon the Wolf Moon since at least the 1930s, when the Maine Farmers’ Almanac began publishing a list of monthly Moon names. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says the Wolf Moon name is thought to have English origins and was brought over by European settlers. It is linked to wolves because they are heard howling more in midwinter, not because they were hungry.

Is January 29 a full moon? Not in 2027. That night the Moon is at last quarter, a week after the January 22 Wolf Moon. In 2029 the Wolf Moon is full on January 30 at 1:04 AM Eastern, which is the evening of January 29 in Mountain and Pacific time, so for the western US the answer that year is yes.

Is it a wolf moon tonight? Only on one night a year, and the date moves. The Wolf Moon is full on January 22 in 2027, January 11 (US time) in 2028, January 30 in 2029, January 19 in 2030 and January 8 in 2031. The table above gives the exact Eastern times, and the paragraph under it gives them in UT.

What does a wolf moon mean spiritually? Inner strength and the pack. As the first full moon of the year it is a check on your January intentions, three weeks in. As the midwinter Moon it asks who you call across the distance and what you can set down before spring. In 2027 it is in Leo, so it adds a push to be seen for who you really are.

What is the rarest moon ever? No single full moon is “the rarest,” but combinations can be. The January 31, 2018 full moon was a supermoon, a Blue Moon (the second full moon of the month) and a total lunar eclipse all at once. EarthSky notes that the last Blue Moon total eclipse for the Americas before that was in late March 1866, so for North and South America it was the first in about 150 years. A Wolf Moon that is also a supermoon, like 2027’s, happens whenever January’s full moon lands near perigee.

What sign is the Wolf Moon in 2027? Leo, at 2°, opposite the Sun in Aquarius. The Wolf Moon is only in Leo when it falls after the Sun enters Aquarius around January 20; otherwise it is in Cancer. 2027 and 2029 are Leo years. 2026, 2028, 2030 and 2031 are Cancer years.

Is the Wolf Moon a supermoon? In 2027, yes. It is the closest full moon of the year, turning full about fourteen and a half hours after a perigee of 357,285 km, the year’s minimum. Whether a given year’s Wolf Moon is a supermoon depends on where perigee falls that month.

“The wolf doesn’t howl because it’s hungry. It howls so the pack knows where to find it.”
