You fall in love the way you make a home: slowly, completely and for keeps. With a Cancer Venus the first spark isn’t a clever line or a great outfit. It’s the moment someone makes you feel safe, and once that happens you are all in, whether or not you’ve admitted it out loud yet.
Your Sun sign is who you are. Your Moon sign is what you need to feel secure. Venus is how you love: what attracts you, how you show affection, what you find beautiful and how you spend. With Venus in Cancer, all of that runs through one question first: can I trust this person with the soft part?
Not sure where your Venus is? It never sits more than two signs from your Sun, which is why only five Sun signs can have a Cancer Venus at all (the working is below). Our free birth chart calculator finds yours from your birth date, time and place.

What Does a Cancer Venus Mean?
In astrology Venus is the planet of love, pleasure and value. In your birth chart it describes what you’re attracted to, how you flirt, how you show affection, what you find beautiful and how you like to spend money. Two people with the same Sun sign can love in completely different languages, and Venus is usually the reason.
Cancer is a cardinal water sign ruled by the Moon. Put Venus there and love becomes a thing you feel, protect and remember. You’re drawn to people who feel like home, you show affection by taking care of someone, you keep every ticket stub and you don’t forget a kindness or a slight. Attraction for you is less “who is exciting” and more “who could I let in.”
The shell is the famous part. A Cancer Venus can seem reserved, even cool, on a first meeting, because the real warmth is kept for people who’ve earned it. Behind the shell is one of the most devoted lovers in the zodiac: someone who notices when you’re tired, remembers how you take your coffee and would rather stay in with you than go out with anyone else.
Cancer Venus Traits
Strengths
- Devotion. When you love someone, you show up, every day, in small ways that add up to a life.
- Nurturing. You feed people, literally and otherwise. Being cared for by you is a full experience.
- Memory. You remember the first date, the song, the thing they said in passing. Nothing is throwaway.
- Intuition. You read a mood before a word is spoken, which makes you an unusually attentive partner.
- Loyalty. You don’t do casual well, and you don’t do disposable at all.
Challenges
- The shell. Protecting yourself can look like indifference, and the right person may walk past.
- Hinting. You expect people to sense what you need. Some of them can’t, and that isn’t a verdict on their love.
- Moods. Your affection has tides. A quiet day can feel like a cold front to someone who doesn’t know you yet.
- Holding on. You stay too long in things that have ended, because leaving feels like abandoning a home.
- Taking it personally. A forgotten text can land like a rejection. It usually isn’t one.
Cancer Venus in Love
You fall for safety first. It might be the person who walks you to your door, texts to check you got home, cooks for you without being asked or simply sits with you in a bad week. Looks matter, charm matters, but neither gets past the gate without kindness.
You show love by taking care. You cook, you remember, you make the bed with their side turned down, you keep a drawer of their things long before anyone has said the word “move in.” Your love language is attention to the details of someone’s comfort, and you’re fluent in it.
Who are you drawn to? Warm, steady, emotionally present people. Someone with a strong sense of family, however they define it, who wants to build something rather than just enjoy something. You notice how a person treats their mother, the waiter and the dog, and you’re right to.
Trust comes slowly and leaves slowly. The AstroTwins’ page on this placement puts it plainly: “With your tender underbelly, it can take you years to get over a breakup.” They also note that “many a Venus in Cancer weds early, even to a childhood sweetheart.” Those are tendencies, not rules, but the long memory is real. Your growth edge is asking for what you need instead of hinting and then feeling hurt when the hint is missed. A direct sentence is not unromantic. It’s a shortcut to being loved properly.
What a Cancer Venus Needs to Feel Loved
- Consistency. The same warmth on Tuesday as on Saturday night. Hot and cold is the fastest way to lose you.
- A home together. Not necessarily a shared address, but a shared sense of “ours”: a sofa, a Sunday routine, a place that is yours as a pair.
- Being fed and feeding. Meals are love in this placement. Someone cooking for you, or letting you cook for them, is worth more than flowers.
- Reassurance in words. You give care easily and ask for it badly, so a partner who says “I’m here, I’m not going anywhere” without being prompted is gold.
- Time near water. A lake, a beach, a long bath. In our view, water does for a Cancer Venus what a good night’s sleep does for everyone else.
If your Moon is also in Cancer, all of this doubles: read Cancer Moon for the emotional side of the same wiring.
Cancer Venus Style: What to Wear and How You Nest
Venus also rules your taste, and a Cancer Venus dresses for comfort and memory. Soft fabrics, cashmere and cotton, a cardigan that has been with you for a decade. You buy things you’ll keep, and you keep things with a story: your grandmother’s ring, the jacket from that trip, the sweater that still smells faintly of someone.
Our rule of thumb for this placement: vintage and sentimental beat new and loud. Pearls, silver and moonstone suit you better than anything that glitters for attention. A soft neckline, a slip dress, a trench with the collar up. The AstroTwins say that “Cancer rules the chest area so you may tease with an open button or low neckline,” and we’d add that for you the tease is quiet, never a shout.
Your home is where your Venus really lives. As the AstroTwins put it, “The kitchen is likely to be the heart of your home.” The sofa is deep enough to sleep on, the lighting is warm, there are framed photos and at least one blanket within reach of every seat. You don’t decorate for guests. You decorate so the people you love never want to leave.
The Cancer Venus Woman
The Cancer Venus woman loves like a lighthouse: steady, warm and hard to see from a distance. She’s quietly observant on a first date and completely devoted by the tenth. These are tendencies, not rules, but she tends to be the one who remembers your sister’s name, your allergies and the thing you said about your father.
In love she wants to be chosen clearly and kept safely. Grand gestures matter less to her than small, repeated ones. Her challenge is the retreat: when she’s hurt she goes quiet, pulls into the shell and waits to be coaxed out, and a partner who reads the quiet as sulking will miss what it actually is (we answer the hurt question in full in the FAQ below). Her growth is saying “that hurt” in the moment instead of carrying it for a year.
If Cancer is also on your horizon, the first impression side of the same sign is in Cancer rising.
The Cancer Venus Man
The Cancer Venus man is the protector who hides the softness. He shows love by fixing your car, walking the dog in the rain and making sure there’s food in the fridge, and he may be slower to say the words than to do the deeds. Again, these are tendencies, not rules, but he’s rarely the player.
He’s drawn to warmth, loyalty and a partner who makes a space feel like home. He wants a family in some form, and he tends to date like someone who’s already picturing the kitchen. His challenge is moodiness he doesn’t explain, and the shell that goes up when he’s hurt and stays up a little too long. His growth is letting his partner see the soft part before it has to be dragged out of him.
Which Sun Signs Can Have a Cancer Venus?
Only five. Here is the working.
Seen from Earth, Venus never gets far from the Sun. Its greatest elongation, the widest angle it can reach from the Sun in our sky, is between 45 and 47 degrees. Meanwhile the zodiac is twelve equal slices of 30 degrees, and Cancer is the fourth slice, so it runs from 90 to 120 degrees of the zodiac.
Put those together:
- The earliest Sun that can pair with a Venus at 90° (the first degree of Cancer): 90 minus 47 = 43°, and 43 minus 30 = 13°, which is 13° Taurus.
- The latest Sun that can pair with a Venus at 120° (the last degree of Cancer): 120 plus 47 = 167°, and 167 minus 150 = 17°, which is 17° Virgo.
So a Cancer Venus needs a Sun somewhere between about 13° Taurus and 17° Virgo. Checked against Cafe Astrology’s daily ephemeris for 2025, the Sun reaches 13° Taurus on May 3 and 17° Virgo on September 9. Dates drift a day either way from year to year, so call the birthday window roughly May 3 to September 9, about four months.
Five Sun signs fit inside that window:
- Taurus Sun (from about May 3): Venus runs well ahead of the Sun as an evening star. Sensual and steady with a tender core. Domhnall Gleeson (born May 12, 1983) has the Sun at 21° Taurus and Venus at 3° Cancer, 42 degrees apart.
- Gemini Sun: Quick on the surface, soft underneath. You talk easily and attach quietly. Natalie Portman (born June 9, 1981) has the Sun at 18° Gemini and Venus at 5° Cancer.
- Cancer Sun: Double Cancer. Love and identity speak the same language, and the language is care. Travis Fimmel (born July 15, 1979) has the Sun at 22° Cancer and Venus at 10° Cancer.
- Leo Sun: Warm and generous, with a need to be adored that Cancer turns into a need to be kept. Anna Kendrick (born August 9, 1985) has the Sun at 17° Leo and Venus at 8° Cancer.
- Virgo Sun (to about September 9): Only the first 17 degrees of Virgo qualify, so Venus has to sit far behind the Sun as a morning star. Practical care with a sentimental streak. Zendaya (born September 1, 1996) has the Sun at 9° Virgo and Venus at 24° Cancer, 45 degrees apart, close to the limit. Chris Pine (born August 26, 1980) has almost the same gap.
Every one of those charts puts Venus within 47 degrees of the Sun, which is exactly what the sum says must happen. If your Sun is in Libra or later, or in Aries or earlier, your Venus is somewhere else. The quickest way to know for sure is the free birth chart calculator linked at the top of this article.

Your Moon Sign Runs Your Cancer Venus
Cancer is ruled by the Moon, so in the old language of astrology the Moon is the dispositor of a Cancer Venus: the planet that hosts it and sets the house rules. In plain terms, how you love takes its cue from your Moon sign. Two Cancer Venus people with different Moons can look nothing alike in a relationship.
Here is how each Moon colors a Cancer Venus. Each line links to that Moon’s full reading.
- Aries Moon: Tender heart, hot temper. You protect fiercely and forgive fast, then wonder why the other person is still upset.
- Taurus Moon: The most settled version. Food, touch, routine and a home that smells like dinner. Hard to rattle, harder to move.
- Gemini Moon: You talk about feelings you’d rather not have. Care comes with commentary, and the shell has a window.
- Cancer Moon: Double Moon. Everything above, turned up. Deep, devoted and in need of regular reassurance.
- Leo Moon: Care with a flourish. You want your devotion noticed, and you nurse a wound in public before you nurse it in private.
- Virgo Moon: Love as service. You show up with soup, a list and a fix, and you need to be told it’s enough.
- Libra Moon: The diplomat’s shell. You keep the peace so well that nobody notices you’ve gone quiet.
- Scorpio Moon: Deep water on deep water. Loyal to the end and slow to forget anything, including kindnesses.
- Sagittarius Moon: You need a home and a road. The trick is a partner who’ll do both with you.
- Capricorn Moon: The protector who builds. You show love in structure: savings, plans, a roof that doesn’t leak.
- Aquarius Moon: Warm hands, cool head. You care about everyone and get cagey when it’s your turn to be cared for.
- Pisces Moon: The softest of all. You feel what your partner feels before they say it, and you need a shell more than most.

Is Venus Weak in Cancer? The Dignity Table
No. The traditional table puts Venus’s fall in Virgo, not Cancer. Here is where Venus stands in every sign, from the standard essential dignity scheme used in Western astrology.
| Standing | Signs | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| At home (domicile) | Taurus, Libra | Venus in its own signs, at full strength |
| Exalted | Pisces | Venus as honored guest |
| Detriment | Aries, Scorpio | Opposite its homes; love in a foreign style |
| Fall | Virgo | Opposite its exaltation; the harshest critic of its own heart |
| Neither | Cancer, Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius | No major strength or weakness |
Cancer is in the last row. Venus’s fall is Virgo, not Cancer. In Cancer, Venus has no major dignity and no debility: it’s a guest in the Moon’s house, which is why your Moon sign matters so much here.
There’s even a minor point in Cancer’s favor. In the Dorothean triplicity scheme (which Ptolemy later modified), Venus is the day ruler of the water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), so a Cancer Venus in a chart for a daytime birth has a small dignity of its own. Ptolemy later handed the water triplicity to Mars by day and night, and William Lilly agreed, so not every astrologer counts it. Either way, nothing in the tables calls this Venus weak.
In our view, sensitivity is not weakness. A Cancer Venus feels more, remembers more and risks more when it finally opens. That’s not a debility. That’s the whole point of the placement.
Cancer Venus Compatibility
The easiest matches for any Venus sign are usually the same element and the one that feeds it. For water, that is other water signs and earth. Here is how a Cancer Venus tends to pair with the other person’s Venus sign.
| Their Venus | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio | Natural | Water meets water: deep, loyal, private |
| Pisces | Natural | Tender on both sides; you both read the room |
| Cancer | Home | Two nesters. Decide who asks for what they need first |
| Taurus | Natural | Earth holds water: steady, sensual, built to last |
| Virgo | Natural | They show love in deeds; you notice every one |
| Capricorn | Magnetic | Your opposite: they build the walls, you warm the house |
| Leo | Spark | Two warm hearts, but they want applause and you want a hug |
| Aries | Work | Fire moves fast; you need time to trust |
| Sagittarius | Work | They roam; you nest. Plan the trips together |
| Gemini | Work | They talk about feelings; you feel them |
| Libra | Work | Venus is at home in Libra, so they keep love light and you go deep |
| Aquarius | Work | Cool and curious where you are warm and attached |
“Work” doesn’t mean doomed. It means saying out loud what the easier pairs get for free. The full picture, with every Venus sign and the elements explained, is in our Venus sign compatibility guide.
Can Venus Be Retrograde in Cancer?
Not in this era. Venus turns retrograde for about 40 to 43 days roughly every year and a half (its cycle relative to the Sun is 583.92 days), and because five of those cycles add up to almost exactly eight years, the retrogrades keep landing in the same five zones of the zodiac. Between 2001 and 2030 every Venus retrograde stations in one of these:
| Zone | Years | Nearest it gets to Cancer |
|---|---|---|
| Aries and Pisces | 2001, 2009, 2017, 2025 | 17° Aries, three signs short |
| Scorpio and Libra | 2002, 2010, 2018, 2026 | 22° Libra, three signs past |
| Gemini | 2004, 2012, 2020, 2028 | 26° Gemini, moving away |
| Capricorn and Aquarius | 2005, 2013, 2021, 2029 | Opposite side of the zodiac |
| Virgo and Leo | 2007, 2015, 2023 | 12° Leo, twelve degrees short |
Not one of those windows touches Cancer. The nearest misses are the Leo retrogrades, which stopped at 16° Leo in 2007, 14° Leo in 2015 and 12° Leo in 2023, and the Gemini ones, which start at 26° Gemini or earlier and move backward, away from Cancer. So if you were born between 2001 and 2030 with Venus in Cancer, your Venus is direct. Full stop. There’s no retrograde version of this placement to worry about, and no shadow period to explain your love life.
Right now, for the record, Venus is retrograde in Libra until November 13, 2026, having turned backward at 8° Scorpio on October 3. It’s passing through Cancer on nobody’s chart.
When Is Venus in Cancer Next?
Venus is in Cancer from July 2 to 27, 2027. It enters at 10:01 PM Eastern (9:01 PM Central, 8:01 PM Mountain, 7:01 PM Pacific) on July 2. The visit before that ran May 18 to June 13, 2026, and before that July 30 to August 25, 2025.
In 2025, 2026 and 2027 Venus spends 25 to 26 days in Cancer, roughly three and a half weeks. While it’s there everyone gets a taste of this placement. Cafe Astrology describes the mood as “dedicated, warm, and devoted,” and adds that “we show our love through our devotion, care, and concern.” Expect more nights in, more cooking, more texts to your mother, more sudden tenderness toward people you’d normally keep at arm’s length. It’s a good few weeks for making up, moving in and feathering a nest. It’s a less good few weeks for cool detachment, which, let’s be honest, was never your strength anyway.
One more date for the diary: the Cold Moon, the full moon of December 23, 2026, falls in Cancer. A full moon in Cancer lights up the house where your Cancer Venus sits, so expect something in love, money or home to come to a head that week.
Growing With a Cancer Venus
- Ask instead of hinting. Say “I need you to text when you land.” Hinting and then hurting is a loop you can step out of with one plain sentence.
- Let the shell have a door. Protecting yourself is fine. Just make sure the right person can tell the difference between “not yet” and “never.”
- Forgive on purpose. Your memory is a gift until it becomes a ledger. Pick one old hurt a month and set it down.
When your tenderness learns to speak up, a Cancer Venus becomes the partner everyone secretly wants: the one who remembers everything, shows up every time and makes a house feel like a home before the boxes are unpacked.
Cancer Venus FAQ
How does Cancer affect a marriage? With Venus in Cancer, marriage is the point, not a step. You tend to commit young or early in a relationship, you build the home before the wedding and you treat the partnership as something to protect. The gifts are devotion, loyalty and a partner who always knows when you’ve had a bad day. The work is the shell (going quiet when hurt instead of saying so), the long memory and a tendency to settle in before you’ve checked the person is actually safe to settle with. A Cancer Sun or Cancer Moon brings the same themes, through identity and emotional needs instead of through love style.
What is the 7th house in Cancer? The 7th house is the house of partnership and marriage. In whole sign houses, Cancer on the 7th house means Capricorn is rising: count Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, and Cancer is the seventh sign. With that setup you present as composed and capable, and you look for a partner who nurtures: someone who feels like family and makes the private world soft. You, in turn, become the home for your partner. If Venus itself sits in Cancer in the 7th house, the same wish is doubled: love is partnership, and partnership is a place to live.
What happens when a cancer woman is hurt? A Cancer Venus woman goes quiet. She retreats into the shell, replays the moment, remembers the exact words and takes a long time to trust the person again, sometimes years. She rarely shouts; the sign of trouble is withdrawal, a sudden politeness or a stop in the small acts of care she normally does without thinking. The way back is steady, repeated reassurance and a real apology, not a grand gesture. A Cancer Sun woman does much the same, with the retreat showing in her whole personality rather than just in love.
How do I find my Venus sign? Venus is never more than two signs from your Sun, and a Cancer Venus is only possible with a Sun in Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo or Virgo (birthdays about May 3 to September 9). To know for sure, enter your birth date, time and place in our free birth chart calculator.
Is Cancer Venus rare? In our view, no. Venus spends about 25 to 26 days in Cancer in the years above, and the birthday window is about four months wide.
What is the difference between a Cancer Sun, Moon and Venus? A Cancer Sun is who you are: your core identity, nurturing and protective in everything. A Cancer Moon is what you need to feel safe: emotional security, home and family. A Cancer Venus is how you love: tender, loyal, slow to open and slow to let go. You can have one, two or all three. Each one adds the same themes to a different part of your life.
“Let them in. The shell was only ever a door.”
