The 12 Zodiac Signs: Dates, Elements, Traits and How to Find Yours

All 12 signs in order, with dates, elements, modes and rulers, what each one is like, and why the Sun sign you know is one of the three big signs in your chart.

Real insights.
Brighter days.
Always.✦

The 12 zodiac signs in order are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. Each sign is a 30 degree slice of the Sun’s yearly path across the sky, counted from the March equinox, and your zodiac sign (your Sun sign) is the slice the Sun was in on the day you were born.

That sign is real and it is useful. It is also one of the three big signs in your chart, along with your Moon sign and your rising sign, and in our view knowing only your Sun sign is like knowing someone’s first name: a good start, not the whole person.

The tables below give all 12 signs with dates, symbols, elements, modes and rulers. After that: what a sign actually is, how to find yours when your birthday sits on an edge, the four elements, the three modes, a short block on every sign, and the two other big signs in your chart.

Three signs carry a second, modern ruler. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered in 1781, 1846 and 1930, long after the traditional scheme was set, and modern astrologers gave them Aquarius, Pisces and Scorpio. Plenty still read Scorpio by Mars first, so this page gives you both.

The dates are the standard ranges, and they are a rounding. The Sun crosses from one sign to the next at an exact minute that moves every year and shifts with your time zone, so if your birthday is the first or last day of a sign, read “How Do I Tell My Zodiac Sign?” below before you commit to a tattoo.

What Is a Zodiac Sign?

A zodiac sign is one twelfth of the ecliptic, the circle the Sun appears to travel around the sky in a year. Western astrology divides that circle into 12 equal parts of 30 degrees each, and the first degree of Aries is defined as the Sun’s position at the March equinox. Twelve signs of 30 degrees make the full 360, and the count starts fresh every spring.

That definition matters more than it sounds. It means a sign is a season slice, not a constellation. Aries is the first 30 degrees of the Sun’s path after the equinox, whether or not the stars of the Ram happen to be behind it.

They mostly are not, anymore. Earth’s axis slowly wobbles, so the equinox point drifts against the stars by about 1 degree every 72 years. Over the roughly 1,700 years since the signs and the constellations last lined up, that drift has reached about 24 degrees, nearly a whole sign. The March equinox point now sits in the stars of Pisces, while the sign of Aries still begins exactly at the equinox, as it has since the tropical zodiac was defined.

This is also why there are 12 signs and not 13. The Sun’s path crosses 13 of the official constellations, including Ophiuchus, which pokes in between Scorpius and Sagittarius. Ophiuchus is a constellation, not a sign. The signs are 12 equal slices of the year, and no star pattern can add a thirteenth to a circle that is already full.

Allure’s guide on Yahoo says, in two sentences in a row, that the Sun does not move and that it is in constant motion. The Sun does not orbit us, but from Earth it appears to slide along the ecliptic by about a degree a day, and the signs measure that apparent motion.

Because Earth’s orbit is slightly oval, the Sun does not spend exactly a month in each sign. In 2026 it spends the least time in Capricorn, 29 days, 10 hours and 40 minutes (December 21, 20:50 UTC to January 20, 07:30 UTC), and the most in Cancer, 31 days, 10 hours and 49 minutes (June 21, 08:24 UTC to July 22, 19:13 UTC). In 2026 Earth is closest to the Sun on January 3 and farthest on July 6, and the Sun’s apparent motion shows it: about 1.02 degrees a day through Capricorn, just over 0.95 through Cancer. The winter signs are short and the summer signs are long.

How Do I Tell My Zodiac Sign?

For most birthdays, the table above is all you need: find the range that holds your birthday and that is your Sun sign. If you were born on the first or last day of a sign, you need your birth time too, because the Sun crosses into the next sign at one exact minute, not at midnight.

Take Taurus. In 2026 the Sun reached 30 degrees, the first degree of Taurus, on April 20 at 01:39 UTC. In the US that is April 19 at 9:39 PM Eastern, 8:39 PM Central, 7:39 PM Mountain and 6:39 PM Pacific. A baby born in New York at 9 PM on April 19, 2026 is an Aries. A baby born an hour later is a Taurus. In 2027 the same crossing comes on April 20 at 07:18 UTC, which is 3:18 AM Eastern, so an April 19 baby that year is an Aries in any of the four main US time zones.

Two things move that minute. The first is the calendar: the Sun’s year is longer than 365 days (from the 2026 March equinox to the 2027 one is 365 days, 5 hours and 39 minutes), so each crossing lands nearly six hours later than the year before, until a leap day pulls it back about a day. The next leap year is 2028. The second is your time zone: the same instant is a different calendar day in Tokyo and in Los Angeles.

Here is how much that rounding hides. Measured in Eastern time, the Sun entered nine of the twelve signs in 2026 one calendar day before the standard table says: Aquarius on January 19, Pisces on February 18, Aries on March 20, Taurus on April 19, Gemini on May 20, Leo on July 22, Virgo on August 22, Libra on September 22 and Capricorn on December 21. Measured in UTC, only four of those come early. In 2027, in Eastern time, only four do.

That is also why three guides give three different date tables. A globe seller’s zodiac post has no dates for Scorpio at all, starts Virgo on August 22 and runs Aquarius from January 22 to February 20. Aglaia’s guide starts eight of the twelve signs one day later than the table above. Allure’s guide on Yahoo matches the table above. In our view the difference is rounding: neither Aglaia’s guide nor Allure’s states a year or time zone for its dates in the text we read.

Our rule of thumb: if your birthday is within a day of a boundary, do not guess. Put your birth date, time and place into our free birth chart calculator and it works out your Sun, Moon and rising signs from your exact birth time and place.

The Four Elements

Every sign belongs to one of four elements, with three signs in each. The element is the broadest thing a sign tells you: how it takes in the world and what it runs on.

  • Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Fire signs act first and feel alive while doing it. They bring heat, speed and faith in the next thing. Their edge is patience, because waiting feels like dying a little.
  • Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Earth signs build. They trust what they can touch, finish and bank, and they are the people whose plans still exist on Tuesday. Their edge is letting go of a plan that has stopped working.
  • Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Air signs think and talk and connect. They are at home in ideas, conversation and the space between people. Their edge is landing: a feeling is not solved by describing it well.
  • Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Water signs feel first and know things they cannot prove. They read rooms, hold memories and bond deeply. Their edge is boundaries, because other people’s weather gets in.

These are tendencies, not rules. A fire sign with a Pisces Moon runs cooler than the label suggests, which is the whole argument of this page.

The Three Modes

Every sign also has a mode (astrologers also say modality or quality), with four signs in each. Where the element says what a sign runs on, the mode says how it moves. The three modes follow the order of the seasons: each season opens with a cardinal sign, settles into a fixed sign and ends with a mutable sign.

  • Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. These signs begin the four seasons, and they begin things in general. Starters, leaders, the first to move. They are better at launching than at maintaining.
  • Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. These signs sit in the middle of each season and hold it. Steady, loyal, built to last. They are better at keeping than at changing.
  • Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. These signs close each season and hand it over to the next. Flexible, curious, quick to adapt. They are better at adjusting than at committing.

Put element and mode together and the 12 signs stop looking like a random list. Aries is cardinal fire: start, now, with heat. Taurus is fixed earth: keep, slowly, with your hands. Each combination appears exactly once, which is why the 12 fit together so neatly.

The 12 Zodiac Signs in Order

Dates, element, mode, ruler, symbol and a short read of each sign. These are tendencies, not rules, and every block links to that sign’s Moon page and its rising page where one is live, because the same sign reads differently in each of the three places.

Aries

March 21 to April 19. Cardinal fire, ruled by Mars, the Ram. Aries is the first sign and acts like it: direct, brave, impatient and fully alive in a beginning. Strengths: courage, honesty and the ability to start when everyone else is still discussing. Growth edge: finishing, and hearing “no” without taking it as a dare. You do not need to win every conversation, but you probably will try. The Aries Moon feels the same fire from the inside. Aries rising wears it on the outside.

Taurus

April 20 to May 20. Fixed earth, ruled by Venus, the Bull. Taurus wants things real: good food, a solid home, people who stay. Strengths: patience, loyalty and a calm that steadies everyone in the room. Growth edge: moving when the ground shifts, because comfort can quietly become a cage. You are not stubborn, you just need a better reason than “because”. The Taurus Moon needs that security to feel safe at all. Taurus rising looks as settled as the sign feels.

Gemini

May 21 to June 20. Mutable air, ruled by Mercury, the Twins. Gemini collects ideas, people and stories, and can hold two opinions at once without strain. Strengths: wit, curiosity and the gift of making anyone feel talked to. Growth edge: depth, and staying in one chapter long enough to finish it. If someone accuses you of having two faces, they have mistaken range for dishonesty. The Gemini Moon talks its feelings out. Gemini rising makes the first impression quick and bright.

Cancer

June 21 to July 22. Cardinal water, ruled by the Moon, the Crab. Cancer protects: a home, a family, a friend who is having a bad week. Strengths: loyalty, intuition and a memory that keeps everyone’s birthdays. Growth edge: letting people in without first building the wall, and not reading silence as rejection. The shell is armor, not personality. The Cancer Moon is the Moon in its own sign, feeling at full volume. Cancer rising reads as soft and watchful.

Leo

July 23 to August 22. Fixed fire, ruled by the Sun, the Lion. Leo brings warmth, generosity and a sense of occasion to an ordinary Tuesday. Strengths: confidence, a big heart and the loyalty of someone who takes being chosen seriously. Growth edge: letting other people have the light sometimes, and hearing criticism as information rather than exile. The Leo Moon needs to be seen to feel loved. Leo rising is the entrance everyone notices.

Virgo

August 23 to September 22. Mutable earth, ruled by Mercury, the Maiden. Virgo notices what is wrong and quietly fixes it, which is a form of love that rarely gets thanked. Strengths: precision, service and a work ethic that makes things actually happen. Growth edge: turning the critic off, especially the one pointed at yourself. Done is allowed to beat perfect. The Virgo Moon feels safe when things are in order. Virgo rising looks neat, calm and slightly reserved.

Libra

September 23 to October 22. Cardinal air, ruled by Venus, the Scales. Libra weighs: both sides, every option, how it lands for everyone involved. Strengths: fairness, charm and taste, plus a real talent for partnership. Growth edge: deciding, and saying what you actually want before you ask what everyone else wants. Peace that costs you your opinion is not peace. The Libra Moon needs harmony to feel settled. Libra rising is the pleasant, polished first impression.

Scorpio

October 23 to November 21. Fixed water, ruled by Mars and, in modern astrology, Pluto, the Scorpion. Scorpio feels everything and shows almost none of it until it trusts you. Strengths: depth, loyalty and the nerve to look at what others avoid. Growth edge: control, and letting a thing be simple when it is simple. Not every silence is hiding something. In 2026 the Sun entered Scorpio on October 23 at 5:38 AM Eastern, 2:38 AM Pacific, a reminder that even the sign of secrets keeps an exact schedule. The Scorpio Moon is intensity on the inside. Scorpio rising is the stare people remember.

Sagittarius

November 22 to December 21. Mutable fire, ruled by Jupiter, the Archer. Sagittarius wants the bigger picture, the farther road and the honest answer. Strengths: optimism, humor and a faith that things work out, which tends to make them work out. Growth edge: tact, and staying for the part after the adventure. The truth can wait until it is kind. The Sagittarius Moon needs room to feel free. Sagittarius rising looks like someone about to leave for somewhere better.

Capricorn

December 22 to January 19. Cardinal earth, ruled by Saturn, the Sea Goat. Capricorn plays the long game and usually wins it. Strengths: discipline, ambition and a dry humor that gets better with age. Growth edge: rest, and remembering that you are allowed to be loved before the goal is reached. The mountain is not going anywhere. The Capricorn Moon keeps feelings on a need to know basis. Capricorn rising looks capable before it says a word.

Aquarius

January 20 to February 18. Fixed air, ruled by Saturn and, in modern astrology, Uranus, the Water Bearer. Aquarius thinks sideways, cares about the group and refuses to do a thing just because it has always been done. Strengths: originality, principle and friendship as a serious art. Growth edge: warmth up close, not just at scale. Loving humanity is easier than loving the person at the table. The Aquarius Moon needs space to feel anything. Aquarius rising reads as cool, curious and a little unusual.

Pisces

February 19 to March 20. Mutable water, ruled by Jupiter and, in modern astrology, Neptune, the Fish. Pisces absorbs: moods, music, other people’s stories, the whole room. Strengths: compassion, imagination and an intuition that is usually right. Growth edge: edges, and knowing which feelings are yours. Escaping is not the same as resting. The Pisces Moon is the softest Moon in the zodiac. Pisces rising looks dreamy, gentle and hard to pin down.

Your Sun Sign Is One of the Three Big Signs

Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in when you were born. Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon was in. Your rising sign (also called the ascendant, same point, two names) is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at your birth time and place. All three are zodiac signs from the same list of 12. They just move at very different speeds.

SignWhat it describesHow often it changes
SunYour core, your drive, who you are becomingAbout once a month
MoonYour feelings, your needs, how you restEvery 2 to 3 days
RisingYour first impression, your style, your approachEvery 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours 29 minutes (at 38 degrees north)

The Sun takes 29 and a half to 31 and a half days to cross a sign, which is why a birthday is nearly enough to find it. The Moon circles the whole zodiac in 27.3 days, so it spends about two and a quarter days in each sign and changes sign every two to three days. The rising sign is a different animal: all 12 signs rise over the eastern horizon in every 24 hours, so it changes every couple of hours, and not evenly. At 38 degrees north (roughly Washington DC, St. Louis or San Francisco), Aries and Pisces rise in 1 hour 15 minutes while Leo and Scorpio take 2 hours 29 minutes.

That is why two people with the same birthday are not the same chart three times over. They share a Sun sign. The Moon may well have changed sign between their births. And using those rising times, two babies born on the same day at 38 degrees north share a rising sign only about one time in eleven. Same first name, different people.

If you only know your Sun sign, the Moon and rising pages are where the picture fills in. Start with Moon sign vs Sun sign for what the Moon adds, and if a full moon lands in your Moon sign, you will feel it before you read about it. Zodiac Sign Compatibility

Zodiac sign compatibility is the idea that some signs get along more easily than others, based on how their elements and positions relate. Two common ideas in Sun sign compatibility are element harmony and the pull of opposites.

The first is element harmony. Fire and air are traditionally paired as the lively, talkative match, and earth and water as the steady, emotional one. Signs of the same element share values, which is comfortable, and can also double each other’s faults, which is less so. Fire with water or earth with air takes more translation.

The second is the pull of opposites. Every sign has a partner six signs away on the wheel, exactly opposite: Aries and Libra, Taurus and Scorpio, Gemini and Sagittarius, Cancer and Capricorn, Leo and Aquarius, Virgo and Pisces. Opposites want what the other has, which is either the best relationship of your life or a lesson, and sometimes both.

Here is the part to take with you: In our view, Sun sign compatibility is the loosest layer of the whole thing. In our view it is a weather report, not a forecast. How you actually love, flirt, fight and forgive is Venus, and in our view two people’s Venus signs tell you more than their birthdays. That is why our Venus sign compatibility guide exists, and why the two love questions below get a “by tradition” answer and a pointer there.

Zodiac Signs FAQ

How do I tell my zodiac sign? Find your birthday in the table at the top of this page. If it falls on the first or last day of a sign, the Sun may have crossed over during that day, so you need your birth time and time zone: in 2026 the Sun entered Taurus on April 19 at 9:39 PM Eastern, so a baby born in New York at 10 PM on April 19 is a Taurus, while a baby born in London at 10 PM the same evening is an Aries. Our free birth chart calculator, linked above, settles it from your exact birth time.

What is zodiac sign compatibility? It is the traditional idea that signs sharing a friendly element (fire with air, earth with water) or sitting opposite each other on the wheel get along more easily. It is a starting point, not a verdict. In our view the Venus sign is where real love compatibility lives.

What is a Pisces soulmate sign? By tradition, Pisces pairs most easily with the other water signs, Cancer and Scorpio, and with the earth signs Taurus and Capricorn, which give its feelings somewhere solid to land. Virgo is its opposite sign, the classic magnetic pull. These are tendencies based on the Sun sign alone; the Pisces Moon and both partners’ Venus signs say more.

What is the zodiac sign for April? April is split between Aries and Taurus. Birthdays up to about April 19 are Aries and from about April 20 are Taurus. The exact crossing moves: in 2026 the Sun entered Taurus on April 19 at 9:39 PM Eastern (6:39 PM Pacific), and in 2027 it enters on April 20 at 3:18 AM Eastern (12:18 AM Pacific).

What is the fakest zodiac? None. In our view the only fake thing in this topic is a date table that ignores the clock and the time zone. If someone accuses the Twins of having two faces, they have mistaken a sign built for two points of view for a sign with a hidden one. Every sign has a shadow, and no sign is a character reference.

Who is Taurus to marry? By tradition, Taurus settles most naturally with the other earth signs, Virgo and Capricorn, and with the water signs Cancer and Pisces, which soften it. Scorpio is its opposite sign and the deep, difficult, hard to leave match. Again, these are Sun sign tendencies. For who you will actually build a life with, compare Venus signs.

“Your Sun sign is your first name. Your chart is the whole story, and it has your name in it three times.”
